Pinewoods Camp is located between two fresh water ponds near Plymouth, MA. Classes and evening dances are held in wood-floored, open-sided pavilions. All campers enjoy afternoon tea and parties after the evening dances in the Camphouse. Long Pond and Round Pond offer swimming, canoeing, and a setting for the occasional aquatic dance. Housing is in small, screened cabins and cottages, and meals are in an open-sided dining hall overlooking Long Pond. Campers share modern bathroom and shower facilities. To help keep the cost of camp reasonable, each camper has an assigned daily work job, such as table setting.

The cost: $310 for adult members of RSCDS and CDS Boston Centre, $330 for non-members. Agess 13-17 (must be accompanied by parent or guardian), $240 for members, $260 non-members.

Some work exchange positions are available; partial scholarship assistance may also be available from other sources.

Apply SOON to ensure your space at ESS 2008!

Application Information

Each camper must register in advance. Campers aged 18 years or over may apply on their own. Campers between 13 and 17 are welcome but must apply with a parent or guardian. Acceptances will be sent by e-mail beginning in late April. If you do not have e-mail, we will send an acceptance by regular mail.

Upon acceptance to ESS, you will receive a packet of materials that includes directions to Pinewoods, travel options, suggestions for what to bring (and not to bring) to camp, and more specific detail on general Pinewoods policies and this year’s special events. We expect those will include the traditional Maypole, if the weather cooperates, a silent auction to benefit ESS, a ceilidh, and a session on The Pinewoods Reel Demystified.

We will also send a form to be returned to us asking about items such as housing, meal and job preferences, roommate choices, and emergency contacts. NOTE: Pinewoods does not permit visitors or pets.

Payment Policy

Each applicant must make a $50 deposit to reserve a place at camp. Checks should be made payable in U.S. funds to "RSCDS Boston Branch-ESS". A $4 service charge must be added to any check that is not drawn on a U.S. bank. Paying by money order or travelers cheques payable in U.S. funds avoids this charge. Once your application is accepted, your deposit is nonrefundable unless another camper can fill your spot.

Full payment is due by June 2, 2008

Financial Assistance

Some work exchange positions are available. Pinewoods Camp and the sponsoring organizations also offer New Generation Initiative Scholarships to younger dancers who have demonstrated exceptional interest in traditional dancing and a capacity for encouraging participation by others. If you believe that you or someone you know may qualify for such a scholarship, please contact ESS Committee member Sylvia Miskoe at < smiskoe at aol dot com >.

ESS is sponsored by the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, Boston Branch.
